Nervous system Flashcards
(11 cards)
Parietal lobe:
responsible for interpreting impulses travelling from body’s sensory receptors. allows us to recognise pain, temp, taste, and smell.
Frontal lobe:
responsible for conscious movement of our skeletal muscles. also contains broca’s area which is responsible for speech.
Occipital lobe:
responsible for visual interpretation and recognition. damage can cause blindness.
Temporal lobe:
responsible for hearing, language processing, and memory. damage leads to memory loss.
Epilepsy:
caused by neurons in brain causing cells to fire all at one time, resulting in seizure.
Functions:
To receive sensory signals from body, interpret info and coordinate a motor response.
Structures:
CNS- brain and spinal cord
PNS- somatic and autonomic NS
Autonomic includes sympathetic and parasympathetic NS.
What is a neuron
a nerve cell that responds to stimulus, converts it into a nerve impulse, and transmits impulses to other neurons, muscles or glands
What is an axon
the structure that transmits signals from the dendrite to the axon terminals
Sensory input:
when sensory receptors receive stimuli from changes inside and outside the body
Motor response:
initiating response by activating muscles via effectors
