Urinary system Flashcards
(7 cards)
Function:
responsible for filtration of blood, selective reabsorption of nutrients, and excretion of wastes, toxins and excess water from the body via production of urine
Structures:
kidneys, urethra, bladder, and ureter
How it maintains blood pressure:
kidneys regulate BP by filtering blood and adjusting the urine volume based on hydration with the enzyme renin.
UTI:
Occurs when bacteria enters the urinary tract, it is more common in women as they have a shorter urethra. symptoms include pain, burning when peeing. can be treated with antibiotics.
Function of nephron:
Responsible for the formation of urine. Filters blood and reabsorbs needed substances back into the blood.
Maintain healthy system:
maintain adequate hydration, wipe front to back, regularly engage in pelvic floor exercises
Urine formation:
- Glomerular filtration: water and solutes are forced through capillary walls of glomerular capsule. once in the capsule, it is called filtrate.
- Tubular reabsorption: important substances in the filtrate are transported out of tubule cells and removed from filtrate. urea and uric acid remain in filtrate.
- Tubular secretion: wastes are removed from blood to be eliminated in urine.
