INTERMITTENT FASTING MODELS Flashcards
(13 cards)
How many weeks of intermittent fasting (IF) is effective?
8 weeks
* IF with 70% CR on feeding day was best
* CR didn’t improve insulin sensitivity
* Lipolysis occured, reduced BW + fat mass
How effective is 4 weeks of intermittent fasting? (EODF)
Calorie and BW decrease
* reduction in total fat mass and eWAT
* but also loss in lean mass
Fasting mimicking diet
A month (25 days normal, 5 day of diet)
* induce reasonable fasting state
* high ketone bodies
* less age-related diseases
Most effective time restricted feeding (TRF) method
8 weeks with a 4-6h window of feeding
* decrease in BW (3%) and insulin resistance
* Not enough for obese patients
HOMA-IR score
Fasting blood glucose + insulin measurement
* work out insulin resistance
* can be applied across wide study
TRF adverse effects?
- Fatigue
-
Dry mouth
Dehydrated? Only consume water during feeding
5 weeks Early TRF WITHOUT Weight Loss
6am-1pm feeding, 18 h fasting
* diff in insulin resistance
2 weeks IF (EODF - mouse)
No weight loss, food intake same (catch up on feeding day)
* more insulin sensitive
* lower levels of IGF-1
Blood IGF-1 and Cancer
IGF-1 stimulates proliferation
* So would reduced lvls reduce cancer prolif.?
eWAT and IF
Seems to become resistant to induction of lipolysis after a while of IF
* Downregulation of ADRB3 (receptor for noradrenaline)
* Usually stimulates lipolysis during fasting state
Liver examination in EODF vs AL mice
EODF > small + brown
AL > larger + yellow (fat droplets)
Metabolic rate differences between mice and humans
24h fasting for humans (barely) but in mice ALL glycogen stores depleted and ketone bodies and lipolysis INCREASE
How long can mice vs humans starve?
Mice - 2 days
Humans - months (12 months in obese man - took fluids and vitamins)
