Intro and Terminology Flashcards
(17 cards)
Gross anatomy
anatomical structures visible to the naked eye
Systemic anatomy
study of a complete system in the body
Anterior/Ventral
toward the front
ex: palms in anatomical position
Posterior/Dorsal
toward the back
ex: dorsal surface of the hands in anatomical position
Cranial/Superior
toward the head/above
ex: nose is superior to the mouth
Caudal/Inferior
toward the feet or below
ex: mouth is inferior to the nose
Medial
toward the midline of the body
ex: 5th digit (pinkie) is most medial in anatomical position
Lateral
away from the midline
ex: thumb is most lateral of the 5 digits in anatomical position
Proximal
closer to the trunk
ex: knee is proximal to the ankle
Distal
further from the trunk
ex: ankle is distal to the knee
Superficial
toward surface of the body
ex: one row of muscled in the anterior compartment of the forearm is superficial/closer to skin surface
Deep
away from the surface of the body
ex: deep row of muscles in the anterior compartment of the forearm
Anatomical reference planes
Median/midsaggital, saggital, frontal/coronal, transverse/horizontal
Median/Midsaggital
divides body into equal R/L halves
Saggital
any plane parallel to median plane
Frontal/Coronal
vertical plane dividing body/organ into anterior/posterior sections
Transverse/Horizontal
horizontal plane dividing body/organ into superior/inferior sections
