Plant Hormones L1/2 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Plants can detect sunlight…
in order to move towards the sun and maximise the amount of sunlight they’re getting.
Plants can also detect gravity…
in order to grow their roots and reach as much water as possible.
Plants can also detect touch…
in order to grow around something.
Plants do not have a nervous system and their endocrine system acts…
LOCALLY
___________ control growth and are produced at the _________ and ___________
Auxins/ tips/ roots
Where do auxins always accumalate?
on the shaded side of shoots/ on the underside of roots
Shoots are positively ____________ so they grow towards the ______
phototrophic/ light
Shoots are negatively __________ so they grow away from ________
geotrophic/ gravity or the ground
Roots are _________ phototrophic and __________ geotrophic
negatively/ positively
What are the three plant hormones that are used in industry?
- Auxins
- Gibberellin
- Ethene
How are auxins used in industry?
- stimulate plants to grow - applied to tissue cultures, like cuttings or cells so that they grow into plants.
- used in weedkillers
How are auxins useful in weedkillers?
When provided in excess, they cause overgrowth, and the weed’s growth pattern is disrupted causing it to die.
How is Gibberellin used? controlling dormancy
Dormancy is the period before growth that the seed is inactive and cannot grow, since the conditions are not perfect yet.
Gibberellin counteracts this, and stimulates germination (growth of seed).
This means that farmers can use gibberellin to induce germination - multiple crops can be farmed over a year, and all crops can be controlled to start growing at the same time.
How is Gibberellin used? inducing flowering/ fruit
Normally requires certain conditions.
Gibberellin allows for more and bigger flowers.
Bigger fruit
How is ethene used?
stimulates and enzyme, which causes the fruit to ripen.
thus, ethene controls the ripening process of fruit.
most plants naturally produce their own ethene.
How is ethene used in the transport of fruit?
Ethene stimulates fruit to ripen
Fruit is picked unripe so that it’s still hard…
… which means it isn’t damaged during transport or storage
Ethene can then be used to ripen the fruit so that it’s soft for consumers
