"as per"

Usage: Vる・Vた・Nの とおり

Also → Nどうり

"as per"
- used when there is a lack of control over the action.

Usage: Vる・Vられる まま(に)

~ことに

"the thing that is (adjective)" "what is most (adjective)"
- the word preceding 「ことに」is generally a feeling.

Usage: A/na/Vた ことに

~あまり

"so much so that..."
- 「Aあまり、B」→ 「Aすぎて、B」

Usage: Nの・Vる・naな あまり

ex) 緊張のあまり、体が震えた。
"I was so nervous (so much so), that my body was shaking.

~わけだ

"No wonder...."

Usage: A/na/V わけだ

ex) 寒いわけだ。雪が降っている。

~わけではない

"It's not that...." "It doesn't mean that...."

Usage: A/na/V わけではない

Also → A/na/V わけでもない

"There's no way that...." "It's impossible..."

Usage: A/na/V わけがない

~わけにはいかない

"I can't afford to...." "there's no way to...."

Usage: Vる・ない・ている・させる わけにはいかない
Also → 「~わけにもいかない」

ex) 税金は、高くても払わないわけにはいかない。
Even though tax is high, there is no way to avoid paying.

~たとたん

"as soon as" "the moment that"
- used for things that are uncontrollable. There is an element of surprise.

Usage: Vたとたん

ex) 窓を開けたとたん、強い風が入ってきた。

~あげく

"but in the end..."

Usage: Vた・Nの あげく

Also → 「~Vた。そのあげく~」

~末
(~すえ)

"after (doing something)...."
- as a result of....

Usage: Vた・Nの 末(に)

ex) 悩んだ末に、進学ではなく就職することにした。
After thinking hard about it, he decided to get a job instead of continuing with studies.

~たかと思ったら
(~たかとおもったら)

Used to express a fleeting/brief moment. By the time that it is realised, it is already over.

Usage: Vたかと思ったら

ex) 花が咲いたかと思ったら、もう散ってしまった。
As soon as the flowers had bloomed, they were gone.

~ところ

Expresses a thought at the current moment.

Usage: Aい・Nの・Vた・Vている・Vていた ところ

ex) お忙しいところ(を)すみません。
"sorry to bother you at this time"

~たところ

"When..."

Usage: Vたところ

ex) 病院で検査したところ、異常はなかった。
When I was examined at the hospital, there were no signs of problems.

~どころではない

"I have not been able to" "I can not"

Usage: N・Vる・Vている どころではない

Also →  「~どころじゃない」

~どころか

"....(something) isn't (true/possible)"

Usage: N・Vる・naな・Aい どころか

→ [aどころか(bも...ない)]

~だらけ

Meaning of 「たくさん」or 「いっぱい」
- a negative or rejected meaning.

Usage: Nだらけ

ex) この手紙の日本語は間違いだらけだ。
"The Japanese in this letter is filled with mistakes."

~たきり

Used when something normal happens, but the following expected action/behaviour does not happen (the action is cut off at a certain point).

Usage: VたきりVない。

ex) うちの子は遊びに行ったきり、帰ってこない。

Additional meaning → To stop doing something (in order to do something else that is more important).

~っぱなし

"all the way" "continuously"
- when something is left in a particular state; a negative feeling

Usage: Vっぱなし

ex) 電車が込んでいて、東京まで立ちっぱなしだった。
The train was crowded, so I had to stand all the way to Tokyo.

~に反して
(~にはんして)

"contrary to..." "opposite to"
- formal equivalent of 「~と反対に」

Usage: Nに反して

~反面
(~はんめん)

"on the other hand..."
- used to compare things (pros/cons)

Usage: Nである・naな・naである・Aい・Vる 反面

ex) パソコンは便利な反面、トラブルも多い。
Personal computers are convenient, but on the other hand, they also cause trouble.

~一方
(~いっぽう)

"it is (adjective) but, ..."
- a comparison (can be used with two different things)

Usage: Nである・naな・naである・Aい・Vる 一方(で)

ex) この布は水に強い一方、熱に弱い。
On one hand, this close is strong against water, but it is also weak against heat.

~一方だ
(~いっぽうだ)

" (the current condition) will only continue"
- when explaining something that will gradually keep going if nothing changes 「どんどん」
