What are the two types of identity?
personal and social
What is personal identity?
the self defined in terms of unique personal attributes or unique interpersonal relationships (young, outgoing)
what is social identity?
defines self in terms of social group memberships (student, punjabi)
what are the three types of self?
individual, collective, relational
what is individual self?
based on personal traits that differentiate self from others
what is collective self?
based on group memberships which differentiates us from them
what is relational self?
based on connections and role relationship’s with significant others
what is self awareness?
psychological state where you are aware of yourself as an object
what is reflexive thought?
thinking about who we are, who we’d like to be and how we are seen by others
describe the mirror test
a test to assess self awareness (usually babies and animals)
assess individuals ability to see themselves in a mirror- baby is marked and they’ll touch their face if they are aware its them

your private thoughts, feelings and attitudes

how others see you, your public image and evaluation of others
what are the effects of having too much self awareness?
stressfull and anxious, constantly aware of shortcomings
what are some examples of avoidance behaviour of self awareness?
alcohol and drugs as a defence mechanism
what is deindividuation
a sate where people are blocked from awareness of themselves as an individual.
fail to monitor actions which leads to impulsive behaviour
what is the definition of mindfulness (according to K-Z 1991)
paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgementally (Kabat Zinn 1991)
what are the effects of heightened public self awareness?
focus on perception by others
nervousness and loss of self esteem
adhere to group norms & avoid embarrassment
concern with physical appearance both self and others
what the definition pf a schema
a scheme is a complex cognitive structure representing knowledge about a context or type of stimulus
what is a self schema?
it is a schema containing Information about the self
how are self schemas stored in the brain?
across the medial prefrontal and medial precuneus (different parts of the brain)
