L4 - Sweat and Skin glands Flashcards
(11 cards)
1
Q
Glands
A
Sebaceous
Ceruminous
Sudoriferous
2
Q
Types of sudoriferous glands
A
Apocrine
Eccrine
3
Q
Sebaceous gland
A
- Connected to hair follicle
- Secrete sebum to lubricate hair, prevent drying out skin
- More active during puberty
4
Q
Ceruminous gland
A
- Modified sweat gland
- in external ear canal
- opens onto skin surface
- ceruminous gland + sebaceous gland secretion = ear wax
5
Q
Apocrine gland
A
Large swear gland
open into hair follicle
viscous sweat
metabolised by bacteria»_space; odour
NOT thermoregulation (related to emotions or sexual activity)
6
Q
Eccrine gland
A
Sweat gland
Forehead, palms, soles
Thermoregulation
Insensible approx 600mL/day
Sensible approx 2L/hr
7
Q
Label
A
8
Q
What happens in the secretory portion of a sweat gland?
A
- Transport of Na+ and Cl- into secretory portion
- Forms NaCl
- Transport of water into secretory portion (osmosis)
9
Q
What happens in the absorbing duct component of a sweat gland?
A
- NaCl and water flow up duct
- Na and Cl diffuse back out
- Water and some NaCl excreted as sweat
10
Q
What happens sweat glands during exercise?
A
- Sympathetic nerve stimulation increases Na, Cl and water into secretory portion
- Increased flow of sweat up the duct
- Body’s capacity to absorb Cl and Na back in is too low
- More water and NaCl excreted in sweat
11
Q
Cystic fibrosis
A
Mutant Cl ion channel
Cl isn’t absorbed back in
Na is absorbed
More salt excreted in sweat
