L4 - Thermoregulation Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
Core Temperature
A
Approx 37
2
Q
Shell Temperature
A
1-6 lower than core
3
Q
How much heat produced per day?
A
6300kJ
Measured by O2 consumption
Varies based on environment, activity, hormones, age, gender, muscle mass and sleep
4
Q
Sources of heat production
A
Basal Metabolic rate 60%
Muscle contraction 30%
Food digestion 10%
Thermogenesis
Shivering
Radiation (sun)
Conduction (hot surfaces)
5
Q
Heat loss
A
Radiation 60%
Evaporation 25%
Convection 12%
Conduction 2%
Faeces and urine 1%
6
Q
Transfer of heat in body
A
Heat generated in body core
- Liver, brain, heart
Transferred through rest of body
- Conducton via tissue
- Convection via blood (larger effect)
7
Q
Thermoregulation when core temp decreases
A
- Central thermoreceptors detect drop in temp
- Control centre (hypothalamus) sends neural signal
- Effectors recieve signal and increase metabolism (fats), activate muscles (shivering) and cutaneous blood vessel constriction (conserve heat)
8
Q
Thermoregulation when core temp increases
A
- Peripheral thermoreceptors detect increase in temp
- Control centre sends signal
- Effectors stimulate sweat glands and vasodilation
