Lab 10: Elbow Complex Exam Flashcards
What is the elbow complex prone to
Over use injuries and concomitant damage following trauma
How should the epicondyle and olecranon sit when looking from behind with the arms bent
Epicondyle should sit above olecranon
What is the normal carrying angle
5-15°
What is the ROM for the active movements of the elbow
- elbow flexion: 140-150
- elbow extension : 0°
- supination: 85°+
- pronation: 75°+
During ROM is the patient is stiff but painless would u still add over pressure
Yes bc u wanna see if it is bc of swelling or scar tissue
If u suspect tendinopathy for the elbow what should u chesk
The wrist bc the tendons go there
When u screen above and below the elbow do u add over pressure
No just check ROM and if it is decreased put a Goni to it
What are the normal end feels for extension , flexion , pronation/supination
• Extension: bony
• Flexion: soft tissue approximation
• Pronation/supination: capsular
What range should u do resisted isometric movements for the elbow and what area they
In midrange
• Elbow Flexion
• Elbow Extension
• Supination
• Pronation
• Wrist Flexion
• Wrist Extension
• Radial deviation
• Ulnar deviation
• Flex/ext of fingers (if necessary
What joint play can u do for the humeroulnar joint
• Distraction of ulna on humerus
• Medial glide of ulna on humerus
• Lateral glide of ulna on humerus
What joint play can u do for humero- radial joint
• Dorsal glide of radius on humerus
• Volar glide of radius on humerus
What does • Dorsal glide of radius on humerus and Volar glide of radius on humerus help with
Dorsal: extension
Volar: flexion
Concave on convex
What joint play can u do for proximal radio ulnar joint
• Dorsal glide of radius on ulna
• Volar glide of radius on ulna
What does Dorsal glide of radius on ulna and
Volar glide of radius on ulna help woth
Dorsal: helps improve pronation ( roll anterior , glide posteior )
Volar: helps supination ( roll posterior , glide anterior )
Convex radial head on concave ulnar
How long is tendinopathy recovery usually
6-12 weeks
What are the 4 soft tissue quadrants of the elbow
- medial
- laterla
- posterior
- anterior
What is included in the medial quadrant of soft tissue of the elbow
• Ulnar nerve
• Flexor/pronator muscle mass
• UCL
How do u palpate the UCL
Palate at 90° , feel for medialepi and go distally and then feel where the joint line is and the UCL is there long ways
What is included in the latera quadrant of soft tissue of the elbow
• Wrist extensors
• RCL
• Annular ligament
What is included in the posterior quadrant of soft tissue of the elbow
- triceps mm and tendon
- bursa
What is included in the anterior quadrant of soft tissue of the elbow
• Biceps muscle & tendon
• Brachialis
• Brachioradialis
What are the special test for ligamentous instability test
• Valgus stress test
• Varus stress test
• Moving valgus stress
What are the special test for tendinopathy test
- cozens test
- mill’s test
- golfer’s elbow test
What are the special test for neurological dysfucntion test
• Tinel’s sign at the elbow
• Elbow flexion test
• Pinch grip test
