Lab 14 Flashcards
(8 cards)
Mechanical digestion
Chewing, stomach churning, segmentation
Chemical digestion
Enzymes breaking bonds of molecules via hydrolysis
Carb/starch digestion
Amylase breaks into simple sugars like Maltose, occurs in mouth and small intestine
Lugol’s reagent
Iodine binds to starch and turns blue/ black, yellow if no starch
Benedict’s reagent
Copper solution reacts with maltose in boiling water
Maltose present: red, orange, yellow, green
No maltose: blue
Protein digestion
Pepsin breaks down proteins into amino acids, occurs in stomach
Proteins visible in tube amino acids are not
Lipids
Broken down by lipase into fatty acids and glycerol, occurs in small intestine aided by bile
Detecting fat digestion
More fatty acids decreases pH
