Flashcards in Lab 3 Pre-quiz Deck (10):
1

Passive transport

substances pass through the plasma membranes without requiring cellular energy

2

Active transport

the cell provides energy in the form of ATP to move substances across the membrane

3

Diffusion

The movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration

4

Investagating factors affecting diffusion of molecules in agar
-what are we trying to discover

would dyes that are larger in molecular size move faster in the agar or would smaller molecules

5

Diffusion of molecules through dialysis
-what are we trying to discover

-How does the size of a molecule affect its ability to pass through the dialysis sac pores
-Would a molecule pass through that is larger or smaller than the pore size?
-Which would pass through more quickly, an intermediate size molecule smaller than the pore size or a very small molecule?

6

Osmosis

The movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration

7

Osmosis in an egg
-what are we trying to discover

The osmolarity of the extra cellular fluids bathing cells affects water movement into and out of cells thereby influencing cell size and shape

8

Isotonic

a solution that has the same concentration of solutes as plasma
-cells in an isotonic solution have the same concentration of solutes and water inside and outside

9

Hypotonic

a solution that has a lower concentration of solutes than plasma
-have a greater concentration of water than plasma
-the cell will swell and can burst (hemolysis)

10

Hypertonic

a solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than plasma
-have a lower concentration of water than plasma
-cells will shrink (crenation)
