Lateralisation And Split Brain Research (Biopsychology) Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is laterisation?
The idea that the two halves of the human brain are not exactly alike.
Each hemisphere has specialisations e.g. language is located in the left hemisphere, and the visual-motor tasks are located in the right hemisphere.
What connects the two hemispheres
The corpus callus - a bundle of nerve fibres
What happens if the corpus callous is severed
The bridge connecting the left and right hemisphere is cut so they can’t take directly too each other - work independently
What does the left hemisphere control -
Language and speech
What would happen if u asked a split brain patient to name an object
The left side of the brain would respond
What does the right hemisphere control
Visual and spatial tasks - motor skills
What would happen if something was only shown to the right hemisphere
The person may be able to draw it or point to it, but can’t say what it is
Where does information from the left visual field go
Right hemisphere - visual motor skills
Where does information form the right visual field go
Left hemisphere - Language
Who conducted split brain research
Roger sperry
What was Sperrys Procedure
An image/word was projected to the right visual field(processed by the left hemisphere) or the left visual field(processed by the right hemisphere).
Asked to describe what they saw
What was Sperrys findings
when an image was shown in the right visual field the patient could easily say what they saw.
If the same image was shown in the left visual field the patient could not say what was seen.
As language is processed in the left hemisphere, the patient’s inability to describe what they saw was due to this. The image was not able to be processed in the right hemisphere.
