Learning Plateaus Abd Performance Curves Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a learning plateau
While beginning to develop and refine skill learning, we will sometimes not progress as well as we would like
Types of learning curves
Linear
Positively accelerated
Negatively accelerated
S -shaped (sigmoid)
What does linear motion entail and when does it occur
Rate of improvement is directly proportional to number of practice sessions
Occurs when the skill is simpler and the performer is highly motivated
What does positively accelerated curve show and when does it occur
Shows slow progress followed by rapid improvement
Occurs when a skill is difficult but once understood progress speeds up
What does a negatively accelerated curve show and when does it occur
Shows rapid progress then a plateau as learning slows down
Common when learning a skill that is easy to grasp but hard to perfect
What does a sigmoid curve show and when does it occur
Slow initial learning then rapid improvement followed by a plateau
Represents a performer struggling at first then making a breakthrough before levelling off
Factors that cause a plateau
Lack of motivation
Mental fatigue / Burnout
Poor feedback / coaching
Lack of variation in training
Skill complexity
Anxiety
Overtraining
Poor goal setting
Strategy to overcome factors of a plateau
Set SMART goals
Variety on training
Schedule rest days
Use video analysis
Introduce progressive overload
Ensure proper recovery
Reassess goals so they are achievable and realistic
