What does Intellectual Property encompass? (Broadly speaking)
Area of law associated with creative effort, good will or commercial reputation.
Copyright
Property right which subsists within a multitude such as the music and film industry.
Copyright does not protect ideas, only the expression of one.
Main legislation for Copyrights?
Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988
How Long does a Copyright last?
70 years after the authors death.
Patents
Ensures the person who obtained the patent has a temporary monopoly over their invention.
How long does a patent last?
20 Years.

Where are applications for Patents made?
HM Patents office.
Trade Marks
Protects owners from unfair competition, forgery and also protects the goodwill of the company.
