LECTURE 10 Flashcards
(7 cards)
describe the erection reflex
- a mans penis is stimulated 2. nerve impulse travels from site of touch to lower part of spinal cord–sacral area 3. nerve impulse travels back to penis 4. erection occurs
what are the 4 phases of the sexual response cycle
excitement, plateau, orgasm, resolution
what are physical changes women’s bodies undergo during each phase of the sexual response cycle
excitement phase: clitoral glans and labia swell due to vasocongestion, vaginal begins to lubricate plateau: clitoris retracts under hood, bartholins glands secrete fluid, labia minora increase in size and turn reddish purple, uterus elevates and increases in sides, inner 2 thirds of vagina expands and lengthens, outer third of vagina forms orgasmic platform orgasm: uterus contracts, orgasmic platform contracts, rectal sphincter contracts resolution clitoris descends to unaroused position, labia return to unaroused state, uterus shrinks returns to normal position, cervix drops to unaroused position, vagina returns to unaroused position
women’s sexual response cycle flow chart
sexual stimulatoin leads to parasympathetic nerve impulses from the sacral portion of the spinal cord as sexual stimulation intensifies: arteries in the erectile tissue dilate; vagina expands and elongates engorged and swollen vagina increases friction from movement of the penis orgasm–rhythmic contraction of muscles of the perineum; muscular walls of uterus and uterine tubes contract
what are physical changes men’s bodies undergo during each phase of the sexual response cycle
excitement vasocongestion of penis results in erection, meatus dilates, testes begin elevation, scrotal skin tenses and thickens plateau phase coronal ridge of the glans increases in diameter and turns a deeper redish purple, cowper’s glands may release fluid, testes become completely elevated and engorged when orgasm is imminent orgasm phase sperm and semen expelled by rhythmic contractions of urethra, contractions of vas deferens and seminal vesicles expel sperm and semen into urethra, prostate expels fluid into urethra, rectal sphincter contracts resolution phase erection subsides, testes descend, scrotum thins, folds return

what changes to women’s breasts occur during each of the 4 phases?
excitement breast increases in size, nipple becomes erect, veins become more visible plateau and orgasm vasocongestion of areola makes nipple seem less erect, rashlike sex flush may appear, breast increases still more in size resolution phase reduction of areola causes increased prominence of nipple, sex flush disappears rapidly, breast size is reduced to normal in 5-10 minutes.
