Lecture 2 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Why are Conventions used in scientific illustration
Like a standard
Create a common language by which form is described both visually and literally
Precision and consistency allow for meaningful comparison and better understanding
Vocabulary is universal
What is Spatial orientation? Why is it used?
Language used ot describe body plane
Ambiguous words like ‘top’, ‘bottom’, ‘up’ and ‘down’ are avoided
Superior vs. Inferior
Top of the head vs. bottom at feet
Lateral vs. Medial
Lateral is going towards the midline, medial is going away from the midline of the body
What is the plantar surface?
The soles of the feet
Ventral vs. dorsal?
ventral is the front of the body, dorsal is the back (think above dump truck)
Anterior vs. posterior
Whats the saggital plane?
Splits the body in half (, usually down place in between eyes)
Mid-saggital plane vs. sagittal plane
Body split into half, mid-sagittal is down the place between the 2 eyes
What is a transverse plane?
splits body between upper and lower half
What is a coronal plane?
Splits down body, front and back side head
Proximal vs distal
On an animal, what is caurdal vs. rostral?
How does the ventral look like on an animal
Under body of animal, between legs (its still the stomach)
Up
Where is the single light source usually placed?
Should be 45° up and to the left of the subject
What is the umbra
Darkest part of shadow (think right under umbrella, is dark)
Different parts of the ball in a single light source?
Highlight, cast shadow(Umbra, penumbra)li, reflected light
What is the Highlight on the ball in the single light source.
most lit up part of ball
Parts of the cast shadow
Umbra (darkest part)
Penumbra (shadow starts to fade out)
What are the qualities of a line
CATest
Coulor boundaries, Countour, angles, texture, edges, surface markings, boundaries, tonal, shading, texture
What do contour lines do?
Show direction (ex: curved tubes)
What do stipled lines show
What is a specular hightlight?
A bright light that shows up on very shiny objects
What is the importsance of the concave vs. convex example?
Shows that highlighting changes the dimension of the object
