1
Q

what is a throwing movement?

A
  • segments moving in sequence from closest to furthest from the base to produce curvilinear motion

Q

what do you need to observe in a throw?

A
  1. the segment, joint and muscles used
  2. the timing of each segment

Q

how is inertia related to distance from the base?

A
  • inertia is smaller further from the base
  • because motion starts in the torso, you have to overcome large rotational inertia to throw

Q

what is a throw-like kick?

A
  • a kick that maximizes the speed of the foot at contact with the ball
  • less force
  • lower segments have lag
  • as you fire proximal segments, you need to stabilize the distal ones

Q

what are the 4 rules for comparing similar skills?

A
  1. smaller and lighter = more segments used
  2. smaller and lighter = greater radius of rotation
  3. heavier and larger = greater involvement of muscles at the base
  4. with racket/bat, eccentric orientation increases radius of rotation

Q

what are the 3 types of performance errors?

A
  1. segmental movement errors (wrong axis, wrong ROM)
  2. sequencing and timing errors
  3. lack of strength or power

Q

how to develop/teach a throwing skill

A
  • start at the distal end
  • more precise motion with less power/force
