Lecture 5 - Planes and Axes Flashcards
1
Q
what is the neutral/zero position?
A
- the segment or joint position where the angle is defined as zero degrees
- generally where the movement starts
2
Q
what are the 3 principle planes?
A
- sagittal
- transverse
- frontal
3
Q
what is the sagittal plane?
A
- splits the body into left and right halves
4
Q
what is the transverse plane?
A
- splits the body into top and bottom halves
5
Q
what is the frontal plane?
A
- splits the body into front and back halves
6
Q
what are the 3 principle axes?
A
- mediolateral axis
- anterior-posterior axis
- internal-external axis
7
Q
what is the mediolateral axis?
A
- corresponds to the sagittal plane
8
Q
what is the anterior-posterior axis?
A
- corresponds to the frontal plane
9
Q
what is the internal-external axis?
A
- corresponds to the transverse plane
- only for appendicular skeleton
- for axial skeleton = superior-inferior axis
10
Q
what movements correspond to the ML axis?
A
- rotations
- flexion-extension
- plantar and dorsiflexion
11
Q
what movements correspond to the AP axis?
A
- rotations
- abduction and adduction
- inversion-eversion
- lateral flexion
12
Q
what movements correspond to the IE axis?
A
- rotations
- internal-external rotation
- twisting/spinning
13
Q
what is the general plane?
A
- the combination of all 3 principal planes
14
Q
what is transverse flexion?
A
- cross the arm in front of the body (flex from transverse position, adduct first)
- transverse extension is the same but behind you
15
Q
what is transverse abduction?
A
- flex first then adduct
