- the participants. Who are you talking to
- the setting or social context of the interaction.
- the function and topic of the discussion.
A domain involves ________ .

- participants
- setting (time and place)
- topic
Other social factors affecting code choice
People may select a particular code or a variet because it makes it easier to discuss a particular topic, regardless of setting or addressee.

What is Diglossia?
It is a situation in which two languages (or two varieties of the same language) are used under different conditions when a community, often by the same speakers.
What is Diglossia according to Ferguson?
DIGLOSSIA is a relatively stable language situation in which, in addition to the primary dialects of the language (which may include a standard or regional standards), there is a very divergent, highly codified (often grammatically more complex).
Features of Diglossia:
- Two distinct varieties of the same language are used in the community with one regarded as a high variety (H) and the other as a low variety (L).
- Each variety is used for distinct functions; H and L complement each other.
- No one uses the H variety in everyday conversation.
What is Polyglossia?
A situation where a community regularly uses more than two languages for distinct purposes.
