Chain of command
An unbroken line of authority that links all individuals in the organization and specifies who reports to whom
Work specialization
The degree to which organizational tasks are subdivided into individual jobs.
Also called division of labor.
Authority
Vested in organizational positions, not people.
Flows down the vertical hierarchy.
Is accepted by subordinates
Responsibility
the duty to perform the task or activity assigned
accountability
the mechanism through which authority and responsibility are aligned
delegation
the process managers use to transfer authority and responsibility down the chain.
Span of management (Span of control)
The number of employees reporting to a supervisor
Has tall and flat structure
Tall structure
Has more levels and narrow span –> tall hierarchy
Flat structure
Have a wide span and fewer levels –> flat hierarchy
Pros Tall sructure
Well defined job description. it is clear who is doing what and who is reporting to whom

Can be overly bureaucratic
A sense of detachment between top-level management and employees at lower ranks
Lack of creativity

Decision authority is located near the top of the organization

Decision authority is pushed downward to all levels
