Lesson 10 - Alien Life Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is extraterrestrial life>
Life outside terrestrial planets
What is Kepler-452b?
“Super Earth” Exoplanet - discovered by Kepler telescope
Why is Kepler-452b impoertant to us?
It is most likely Earth so it could sustain life.
Approximately, how many galaxies are in our Universe?
Around 100 billion
What does S.E.T.I stand for?
Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence
What equipment is mainly used for SETI?
Radio telescopes. They look at radio signals from space.
In the radio signals, what do the numbers and letters stand for? (Hint: the WOW! Signal)
The WOW! Signal contained letters and numbers. Letters in the reading meant there were EXTREMELY HIGH radio signals, where the letters went all the way up to U.
Why do scientists believe radio waves are a good way to detect signals from extra-terrestrial civilizations?
Radio waves can travel in space.
Why are organic molecules (carbon-based) important?
They occur naturally throughout interstellar space. These molecules are needed on a planet for life.
What is the Goldilocks Zone?
It is the region around a star at which the temperature is between the range at which water can exist.
What is a galaxy?
Collection of solar systems + stars
What is an exoplanet?
A planet that does not revolve around a star (or its own ‘Sun’)
