Lesson 5 - The Earth Seasons Flashcards
(11 cards)
What force is used to explain planetary orbit?
Gravity
What is the difference between geocentric and heliocentric?
Geocentric is the idea of the Earth being the centre of the Solar System, and heliocentric is the idea of the Sun being in the centre of the Solar System.
Who used a telescope to observe moon orbiting Jupiter?
Galileo used the telescope.
In the summer, is the Sun’s rays spread over a larger area or a smaller area?
Smaller area - it is warmer.
In the summer, is the axis tilted towards or away from the Sun?
Towards
In the winter, are the days longer or shorter?
Shorter
What happens in the Summer in the North Pole? (Try to recall everything you know/remember)
The North Pole experiences continuous daylight, known as the midnight sun for several months. This period of time normally lasts Late May or early June to late July or early August. The average summer temperature is 0 degrees celsius, which is why the snow and ice does not melt.
What happens in the Winter in the North Pole? (Try to recall everything you know/remember)
There is along period of darkness, where the Sun does not rise. There are very low temperatures, average temperature is -40 degrees celsius.
What is the Summer and Autumn in the North Pole?
The Summer and Autumn are just brief transitions between the long winter and the summer in the North Pole. They tend to last only a few weeks.
How do some animals behave in the Summer in the North Pole? (Try to recall everything you know/remember, or just take a guess)
Many animals remain active through the 24 hour daylight period, and go to hunt and feed.
Animals forage for plants/food while there is less snow than the winter.
As summer ends, many birds migrate.
How do animals behave in the Winter of the North Pole? (Try to recall everything you know/remember, or just take a guess)
Animals reduce their activity and movement to conserve energy, and also store fat.
Some animals hibernate.
Some birds will migrate.
Animals like polar bears realy on sea ice to hunt animals like seals during winter.
Animals need to face a lot of changes in Winter.
