Lesson 8 - Cosmology And The Big Bang Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the eight phases of the moon?
New moon, waxing crescent, first quater, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent, new moon
How does a solar eclipse occur?
The Moon comes in between the Sun and the Earth
How did the Universe begin?
There are only theories, like The Big Bang, but no one actually knows.
What is cosmology?
Cosmology is the science of the whole universe
Approximately, how long ago did the universe start?
13.8 billion years ago
What is the Big Bang Theory?
1927, George Lemaitre had an idea. He said that a very long time ago, the universe started as just a single point. He said it then stretched and expanded to get as big as it is right now, and it will keep on stretching.
Following to this, Edwin Hubble noticed that galaxies were moving away from each other. Farthest galaxies were moving faster than the closer ones. This meant that the universe was expanding.
Summary - The Big Bang Theory is the belief of the Universe starting by a mere dot before expanding.
How did the universe start according to the Big Bang Theory?
When the universe began, it was just hot, tiny particles mixed with light and energy.
What is a piece of evidence to support the Big Bang Theory? (Hint: Rainbows)
When light hits water, the colours you can see are like a rainbow. This showed that light is made of the colours of the rainbow, and it refracted when it hit the water. This caused the light to split. There are different wavelengths to the different colours - more wavelength to less wavelength = red to purple. Then, scientists started to notice that as stars/galaxies moved away, they had a more glowing red light. This was evidence to support the fact that there space between Earth and other galaxies was gradually getting bigger.
