what is placemaking
deliberate shaping of an environment to facilitate social interaction and improve a communities quality of life

how does identity link to sense of place
our sense of place can be so strong it forms part of our identity
what is nationalism
loyalty and devotion to a nation, which creates a sense of natural consciousness
-strengthened by a common language, national anthem etc
what is regionalism
consciousness of, and loyalty to a distinct geographical region
-sometimes people are more loyal to their region than nation, e.g. cornwall
-regions may wish to be separate from a country, and make their own political decisions
what is localism
an affection for and pride in your local place
-playing for a local sports team, reading local news
what is homogenisation
globalisation has made ‘place’ less important, and that people are losing their identity due to increased flows of ideas/culture
what is a clone town
when a high street is dominated by chain stores
what is placelessness
a place or environment lacks a distinct character or unique identity, often resulting in a feeling of sameness or a lack of attachment to a specific location
what is glocalisation
adapting global brands to the local market
-e.g. Mcdonalds menu changes depending on country
what is diaspora
the idea that your personal identity is connected to multiple places. Strongly linked to migration and flows of people
what does it mean to belong to a place
you feel like you are welcome and have a sense of security/safety
-being part of the community
-often a focus of regeneration schemes
-influenced by many factors
