what is an insider
people who feel a sense of belonging in a place
what is an outsider
someone who feels alienated and out of place, no sense of belonging
where may an insider be born

what is social exclusion
exclusion from the prevailing social group and its rights and privileges
-‘‘out of place’’ within a society
-may be done due to poverty, or being part of a minority
what is spatial exclusion
being excluded from certain spaces
-can be deliberate - anti homelessness, or due to a lack of government intervention- lack of accessibility ramps
what are gated communities
enclosed housing estates with controlled access, only residents can enter and leave
-20,000 gated communities within the US, e.g. Los Angeles
how does exclusion affect wellbeing
living in deprives conditions -> lower quality of life
limited social and educational opportunities
threat to mental health
threat to personal safety
how are people excluded in Tanzania (case study)
Albinism
-Tanzania has the largest rate of people with albinism
-these people are socially alienated and stigmated, blamed for natural disasters such as famine and drought
-superstition that their body parts can be used to make charms and potions which bring good fortune
-a complete set of organs is worth $75,000 by networks serving wealthy people
-worth more alive
-> human trafficking
-wealthy people are buried with 4 albinos, so they can carry into afterlife
