What are the anterior chest muscles from superficial to deep? (4)
- Pectoralis major
- Pectoralis minor
- Serratus

Where does the pectoralis major insert on?
The humerus
Where is the pectoralis major located?
Makes up the majority of the chest/breast area
- doesnt cover the sternum
Where is the pectoralis minor located?
Over ribs 3-5 attaching onto the scapular spine
- under the pectoralis major
What are the branches of the aorta (left to right and anterior to posterior)?
- Brachiocephalic trunk
- Common carotid artery
- Subclavian
Serratus
Latin for saw
What does the serratus anterior muscle cover?
The posterior portion
- outer aspect of the ribs
- doesnt go intercostal
Where is the serratus anterior muscle located?
Over the ribs 1-8 on the posterior aspect on the lateral side
- on both sides (not in the medial aspect)
What does the serratus anterior muscle do?
Acts to pull the scapula forward around the thorax
How many intercostal muscles are there?
3
What are the 3 intercostal muscles?
- External intercostal
- Internal intercostal
- Innermost intercostal
What are the posterior chest wall muscles? (4)
- Rhomboid
- Latissmus dorsi
- Trapezius
- Shoulder girdle muscles
Where is the rhomboids major located?
Inferior to the rhomboids minor
- on the posterior aspect
What does the rhomboid major connect?
The scapula to the vertebrae of the spinal column
What does the rhomboid major do?
Keeps the scapula pressed against thoracic wall and to retract the scapula toward the vertebral column
- works with the rhomboid minor to do this
Where is the rhomboid minor located?
Superior to the rhomboid major
- smaller
What does the rhomboid minor do?
Same thing as the rhomboid major
- helps it
Where is the trapezius located?
Is a diamond muscle on the posterior aspect that goes from the neck down the spine and out over the scapula
What does the trapezius do? (2)
- It moves the scapula

Where is the latissmus doris located?
Inferior to the scapula and covers the lower back
Where does the latissmus dorsi attach to?
The medial aspect of the humerus
How far does the trapezius go down?
To L1
What does the latissmus dorsi do? (5)
- Extension
- Adduction
- Transverse extension
- horizontal abduction - Flexion from an extended position, and
- Medial internal rotation of the shoulder joint
What is the largest muscle in the upper body?
Latissmus dorsi
