Life Threatening Conditions (Injured Child) Flashcards
(20 cards)
is death caused by suffocation from submersion in liquid when the inhaled water fills the lungs and therefore blocks the exchange of oxygen in the alveoli.
Drowning
is used to describe the child with a submersion injury who requires emergency treatment and who survives the first 24 hours after injury
Near drowning

- Nasogastric tube (NGT)
- Albuterol
- Warm blanket

to prevent bronchospasm

PREVENTION OF DROWNING
Provide age-appropriate education for parents/caregivers and
children including:
◦ Use fencing and gating of appropriate height and material around the swimming pool.
◦ Ensure adequate and consistent adult supervision of children during water activities.
◦ Use approve floatation device while swimming or boating.
◦ Toddlers can drown in shallow areas like buckets, basin and toilets thus should always be adequately supervised.
Any child with a history of draining exudate from the ear canal needs an
