What are support networks
a range of services available in HSC to help individuals
they provide: advice, information, practical support
different types of support networks
support groups, informal support, advocacy services
what do support groups do
they aim to help individuals regain their control in their life and help empower them
what is informal support
this is given by those who are not paid to support you and those who are professionally trained
-usually provided by friends and family
what are advocacy services
an advocate is someone who speaks on behalf of an individual who is unable to speak for themselves (lack capacity)
-e.g. SEAP, Mencap, Empower me
how can advocates help
-Go to meetings with them or attending for
them
-Helping an individual find information
-Writing letters on the individuals behalf
-Speaking on behalf of the individual at a
case conference to express their wishes
what will advocates do on behalf of the individuals best interests
-Be completely independent and represent the individual’s views
-Ensure an individual’s rights and needs are recognised
-Represent an individua’s wishes and views
-SPEAK ON BEHALF OF an individual who cannot speak for themselves
