Blocks reabsorption of sodium/chloride in the LoH
Excretion of potassium is increased
Indications
Edema related to heart/liver/kidney failure
Alternative for HTN
SE/AE
Ototoxicity
Hypokalemia
Hypotension
Dizziness
Black box: fluid/electrolyte imbalances
Patient teaching
Do not increase sodium intake
Nursing intervention
Potential for K+ supplements - especially if also taking digoxin (a-fib medication)
Monitor if patient is taking aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin) - possible added nephro/oto-toxicity
Overdose treatment is fluids and potentially vasopressor meds
