Lu 1: ZHONGFU
Central Treasury
Entry Pt. Find the large hollow that lies below the lateral end of the clavicle and just lateral to the top of the ribcage. Lu 1 is found at roughly 1.6 cun inferior to this dip and allowing for the barrel
shape of the ribcage the point may lie very slightly lateral to this horizontal line. The point is just below a ridge of muscle (the pectoralis major). If the patient rests their hand on their
hip, the sub-clavicular triangular dip becomes more pronounced; if they then push their hand firmly down on to the hip bone, the muscle ridge is highlighted (the pectoralis
major). In order to mark and needle the point, the patient must return to a relaxed position with their arm by their side.
Another method to highlight the muscles is with your patient’s arm lying prone by their side ask them to lift their arm whilst you resist the movement by pressing down on their hand.
Alternatively, the point is 6 cun lateral to the mid-line on a level with the 1st intercostal space. At the mid-line find the raised bump, the sternal ridge, where the manubrium joins
the body of the sternum. From here, walk two fingers out laterally along the prominent 2nd rib until you fall off its end into a cavity. This is Lu 1. It is often tender.
Lu 2: YUNMEN
Cloud Gate
Find the large hollow that lies inferior to the acromial end of the clavicle, and lateral to the top of the ribcage,
or the point where you feel the ribcage starts to curve posteriorly. The point lies here in the infra-clavicular fossa, at roughly 6 cun lateral to the mid-line at Ren 22.
Lu 3 TIANFU
Heavenly Treasury
6 cun above the flexure of the elbow (Lu 5), on the posterio-lateral border of the biceps muscle in the seam between the bone and the muscle. Ask the patient to raise their forearm against the resistance of your hand to reveal the biceps muscle. As with Pc 2 the
position of the posterior border of the biceps varies enormously depending on a person’s build. Put your fingers on the lateral surface of the patient’s arm
where you can feel the humerus bone. Palpate anteriorly until they fall into the seam between bone and muscle. This is the line of the Lung Channel.
Find 6 cun by dividing the 9 cun length into 3 equal parts.
Lung 4 XIABAI
Guarding White
5 cun above the flexure of the elbow (Lu 5), on the posterior border of the biceps muscle. See Lu 3 above
for method of location.
Lu 5: CHIZE
Foot Marsh
Gently raise and lower the forearm to expose the large depression of the cubital fossa, just lateral to the cord-
like tendon of the biceps. Locate and needle with the elbow slightly bent (flexed).
Lu 6: KONGZUI
Biggest Hole
7 cun proximal to Lu 9, on the line joining Lu 9 – Lu 5. The point lies on the ulnar border of the radius, in the muscle that raises the forearm
(brachioradialis).
Lu 7: LIEQUE
Broken Sequence
11/2 cun proximal to Lu 9. Feel along the channel from Lu 9, through Lu 8, then move out diagonally and radially to where the styloid process of the radius starts to flare. The point lies on the ventral lateral surface of the forearm just medial to the lateral edge of the radius, and medial to the tendon that raises the thumb (abductor pollicis longus). To locate this tendon place your finger roughly where you Broken Sequence 11/2 cun proximal to Lu 9. Feel along the channel from Lu 9, through Lu 8, then move out diagonally
and radially to where the styloid process of the radius starts to flare. The point lies on the ventral lateral surface of the forearm just medial to the lateral edge of the radius, and
medial to the tendon that raises the thumb (abductor pollicis longus). To locate this tendon place your finger roughly where you feel the point to be and ask your patient to rotate their thumb. You will feel the tendon as
they pull their thumb back.
feel the point to be and ask your patient to rotate their thumb. You will feel the tendon as they pull their thumb back.
Lu 8: JINGQU
Channel Ditch
1 cun proximal to Lu 9. Find the highest point of the radial edge of the styloid process of the radius. At that level, come across (towards the ulna) until
you are just radial to the radial artery. The point lies here, between the bone
and the artery.
Lu 9: TAIYUAN
Great Abyss
The point lies at the proximal radial corner of the scaphoid bone.
Starting at the centre of the distal wrist
crease, feel out laterally towards the thumb-side, over a round carpal bone (the scaphoid).
The point is on the proximal, radial corner of this carpal bone at the flexure of the wrist. Raise and lower the person’s hand to expose the position of the flexure of the wrist. The point lies between the largish tendon that
pulls up the wrist (flexor carpi radialis) and the little tendon that controls the thumb (abductor pollicis longus).
