What was the gunpowder plot? And how is it linked to Macbeth?

A

1605 historical event where a group of Catholics plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I, aiming to restore Catholicism in England

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in order to warn the Jacobean audience. If anyone were to plot to harm the king or commit treason they will suffer dire consequences. This was to make James I feel more safe

A

An Italian philosopher , his idea was that it was fine to use manipulation and deception to gain or maintain authority. Macbeth could be described as being ‘Machiovellian’ as he is ruthless and does whatever it takes to remain King.

A

The witches could represent the fates from classical Greek and Roman mythology as the three fates control peoples destiny, meaning they represent the past, present and future. This reflects the predictions they give Macbeth as they claim to “Spin the threads of life”
