Mark-release-recapture Flashcards
(8 cards)
Initial sample taken
Capture organisms of a species
Mark them so we know they in original sample
Count how many sampled = sample of population
Marking on initial sample taken must….
Not affect survival of them eg is toxic or make them more visible to predators
Resistant to water etc
Release of initial sample
Back into original population and leaves enough time to randomly disperse into rest of population
Second sample taken
Count number that was marked from original sample that was recaptured in second sample
How to find estimate for population
Number in first sample x number in second sample
____________divided by___________
Number marked in second sample
Assumption
The population size is constant so no new births, deaths, nor migration
Animals redistribute evenly
Ethics
Non toxic to animals - marking
Does not increase chance of predation if marked
Does no reduce chance of reproduction if marked
Captured in a way that causes no harm
Why is the population size estimate inaccurate?
Due to assumptions
