Commutative Property
The commutative property states that you can add or multiply, and receive the same answer, regardless of the order of the numbers.
EX: 1 + 2 = 2 + 1
EX: 2(3) = 3(2)
Associative Property
The associative property states that you can add or multiply, and receive the same answer, regardless of how the numbers are grouped.
EX: 1 + (2 + 3) = (1 + 2) + 3
Identity Property of Addition
The identity property of addition states that zero added to any number is the number itself.
EX: 2 + 0 = 2
Identity Property of Multiplication
The identity property of multiplication states that a number multiplied by 1 is the number itself.
EX: 2(1) = 2
Inverse Property of Addition
The inverse property of addition states that adding the opposite of a number to the number will give you a sum of zero.
EX:2 + (-2) = 0
Inverse Property of Multiplication
The inverse property of multiplication states that if you multiply a number by its reciprocal, the product is 1.
Ex: 2 x ½ = 1
Distributive Property
The distributive property states that multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately.
EX: 2(3 + 4) = 2(3) + 2(4)
