Anti Diarrheal

Stool Softeners - colace (docusate)
Promotes water into stool
•Does NOT stimulate Peristalsis
•Onset 72 Hours
•Short term therapy only
•Long term use may lead to dependence and electrolyte imbalance
•PO or PR (per rectal)
Osmotic Laxatives - MiraLAX, lactulose and goLYTELY
Causes retention of fluid in the intestinal lumen
•Onset: 15 minutes – 3 hours
•Caution: do not use mag products in renal failure patients
Stimulant Laxatives - Bisacodyl - Dulcolax PO or PR
Increase peristalsis by irritating colon wall and stimulating enteric nerves
•Onset 12 hours
•Most widely used OTC
•Do not use with intestinal obstruction, severe constipation or impaction
