Mendelian genetics pt 2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
when do you use the product rule
when events are independent
when do you use the sum rule
when events are mutually exclusive events
what is a polymeric gene
one gene that has multiple different versions or alleles within a population
what does F1 suggest when it has an intermediate phenotype
suggests blending inheritance
what does F2 suggest when it includes both parental phenotypes
it rejects blending inheritance and supports particular inheritance
what is Co-Dominance
when both parental phenotypes are present in F1
what are phenotypes controlled by
by many genes that have an additive effect
how may phenotype characters appear
- continuous
- quantitative
explain an additive effect of a phenotype (skin color)
skin color is coded by 3 genes, each of which has an allele coding for color
- the phenotype is determined by total number of color producing alleles which range from 0/6v to 6/6
what type of distribution does a polygenic trait display in a population
normal distribution
what effect will the number of genes have on the number of phenotype classes
the more genes involved = the higher the number of phenotypic classes
what other factor can have an effect on phenotypes
the environment - it can smooth out the differences among phenotypes
what is incomplete dominance
neither of two alleles for a particular trait is fully dominant, resulting in a blended phenotype in heterozygous individuals
what is Co-dominance
a scenario where both alleles for a trait are expressed equally in the phenotype of an individual. Instead of one allele masking the other, as in complete dominance, both alleles contribute to the trait, resulting in a unique phenotype.
what are polygenic traits
Polygenic traits are characteristics determined by the combined effect of multiple genes, rather than a single gene.
