- conducted in a natural environment
- independent variable is manipulated
- dependent variable is measured
- ppts are tested in their usual setting
- ppts may not know they’re part of an experiment until it’s over

- greater ecological validity
- more natural ppt behaviour
- realistic testing environment
- no demand characteristics if ppts are unaware

what are the limitations of field experiments?

- greater chance of extraneous variables affecting results
- ethical issues if ppts are unaware
- no prior consent or right to withdraw
- debriefing and withdrawal of data may be necessary
