what is the function of calcium
calcium is required for building bone and hard tissue and achieving a high peak bone mass
calcium affects on health
reduces risk of dental decay increasing self esteem and confidence, increasing bone density and achieving peak bone mass, decreasing risk of osteoporosis later in life, decreasing stress and anxiety
food sources
milk, dairy, salmon, sardine bones, leafy greens and fortified products.
what is a fortified product
where a nutrient has been artificially added to a food product
what is the function of sodium?
it regulates the fluids and and balance of fluid insie and out of the cells (intracellular) and (extracellular) fluid.
sodium affect on health
high levels of sodiumcan draw extra fluid out of the body’s cells and lead to hypertension(high blood pressure), heart failure, stroke, heart attack, kidney disease and osteoporosis.
food sources of sodium
salt, pork, cheese, bread processed foods e.g. biscuits
iron affect on health
a person who doesn’t receive enough iron or looses too much of it is at risk of anemia which is the reduced ability for the body to deliver enough oxygen to cells due to lack of healthy red blood cells.
function of iron
forms essential part of the blood, the part of the haemaglobin that transports oxygen throughout the body.
food source of iron
lean meats, red meats, fish, eggs, tofu, brown rice leafy greens.
