Protien Flashcards
(8 cards)
what is protien’s main function?
to maintain, grow, replace and repair body cells (important for growth in youth)
what is protien’s secondary function?
to act as a fuel for producing energy
what are proteins made up of?
amino acids
what are essential amino acids?
amino acids that cannot be synthesised in the body and must therefore be consumed for optimal functioning
what are non essential amino acids?
amino acids that can be synthesised (or made) in the body from other amino acids
what are ‘complete proteins’
protiens that contain all essential amino acids in the quantities required for growth, repair and replacement of body cells
how do proteins produce energy?
the protein is broken down into amino acids and is then converted into fats or carbohydrates as a fuel to produce energy
food sources of protein
lean meats, fish, egg, chicken, milk, legumes, nuts, and cheese
