Q

how are steroids formed, hint (form follows function)

A

*** STEROIDS ARE FORMED BASED ON THE R-GROUP/FUNCTIONAL GROUP ADDED TO A HYDROCARBON CHAIN

Q

formal definition of dehydration synthesis

A

where the fatty acids react with the alcohol groups (OH-) on the glycerol molecule to form an ester bond with the release of water.

Q

will optical isomers have the same chemical properties/function

A

no, form follows function, so with the mirrored arrangement of the isomer, the function will also follow suit in being different

(example of this includes alpha and beta glucose, alpha= energy storage, beta= structural components)

Q

why do we need fat

A

fat is important:

  • helps with intaking and dissolving fat-soluble vitamins
  • insulation
  • energy storage
  • cell cushioning
  • increased brown fat increases temperature in blood
  • important for organs

(APPLIES FOR HEALTHY FATS!!)

Q

how do the properties of water benefit freshwater fish during the winter?

A
  • hydrogen bonds become more rigid when the water freezes, making ice less dense than water, letting it float overtop as a “insulation layer”
  • water has great energy and heat attachment properties, so it can have an adequate temperature for the fish to survive in the wintertime

Q

Why do you need water for the breakdown of carbs and protein

A

hydrolysis requires water because you’re reversing the process of dehydration synthesis, where a water molecule is formed from the formation of a disaccharide

now, when we want to break that disaccharide, we want that water to be present during the breakage
