Mitosis Flashcards
(16 cards)
1
Q
What is Mitosis?
A
- Cell Division (division of nucleus)
For the purpose of: - growth
- repair
- replacement
- aSexual reproduction (Binary Fission)
2
Q
Phases of Mitosis
A
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
3
Q
What type of cells don’t undergo mitosis?
A
Reproductive cells
- Sperm cells
- Egg Cells
4
Q
Why is mitosis important for the human body?
A
- Growth
- Repair
- aSexual reproduction in bacteria
5
Q
The cells created in mitosis are -
A
- Identical
6
Q
What are chromosomes made of?
A
- DNA
- Protein
7
Q
How many chromosomes should be in each diploid cell after mitosis?
A
- 46
8
Q
What is Binary Fission?
A
Division of bacterium cells
- Bacterium copies DNA
- Each copy moves to either end of cell (DNA seperation)
- Cell splits into two identical cells
9
Q
Prophase
A
- Preparing to divide
- chromosomes condense + become visible
- centrioles and spindle fibres form
- nucleus membrane disintegrates
10
Q
Metaphase
A
- chromosome line up in the Middle of the cell (equator)
- spindle fibres attach to the chromosomes
11
Q
Anaphase
A
- chromosomes move Away from each other
- centrioles use the spindle fibres to drag the chromosomes away from the centre of the cell
12
Q
Telophase/Cytokinesis
A
- Two new cells form, nucleus membrane forms and is visible
- the nuclear envelope reforms
- cells seperate altogether
13
Q
What is the “in between” phase in cell division?
A
- interphase
14
Q
During interphase, the DNA forms into loose strands called -
A
- chromatin
15
Q
What structure reappears during telophase?
A
- nuclei
16
Q
What phase does the spindle form?
A
- prophase
