Mitosis and the cell cycle Flashcards
(11 cards)
What type of cell division occurs during the cell cycle?
Mitosis
What are the cells produced at the end of mitosis called?
Daughter cells
True or False: Daughter cells produced in mitosis are identical to the parent cell.

True
Fill in the blank: The formula to estimate the length of different stages of the cell cycle is: Length of time in phase = _______
(observed number of cells at that stage / total number of cells observed)
× total length of time of cell cycle
What is the first stage of Mitosis?
Prophase, Chromosomes duplicate to from another full set of chromosomes. E.g 23 pairs chromosomes become 46 pairs.
What is the second stage of Mitosis?
Metophase, Other sub cellular organelles duplicate. E.g. Ribosomes, cytoplasm and mitochondria. The chromosomes also line up at the equator of the cell.
What is the third stage of Mitosis?
Anaphase, 1 of each pair of chromosomes is pulled to opposite poles of the cell using spindle fibres
What is the last stage of Mitosis?
Telophase (pronounced teelophase) The cell membrane splits and the nucleus reforms. The daughter cells are genetically identical.
