Response to exercise Flashcards
(12 cards)
What do muscles need to contract?
Energy
What happens to the breathing rate during exercise?
It increases to bring more oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide
What occurs to the heart rate when exercising?
It increases to supply the muscles with extra oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
What happens if insufficient oxygen is available to the muscles during vigorous exercise?
Muscles begin to respire anaerobically
What is produced from glucose when muscles respire anaerobically?
Lactic acid
How does anaerobic respiration affect muscle contraction?
Muscles continue to contract but less efficiently
What builds up during long periods of vigorous activity?
Lactic acid levels
What happens to glycogen reserves in the muscles during prolonged exercise?
They become low as more glucose is used for respiration
Where is additional glucose transported from during exercise?
From the liver
What does the build-up of lactic acid produce?
An oxygen debt
What happens when body stores of glycogen become low?
The person suffers from muscle fatigue
Fill in the blank: Muscles begin to respire _______ when there is insufficient oxygen.
anaerobically
