What is the pelvic bone made up of?
Iliac, Ischial, pubic bones, sacrum and coccyx and lower lumbar vertebrae.
What three bones fuse together at the acetabulum?
- Ilium (superior portion)
- Ischium (posterior inferior portion)
- Pubic bone (anterior inferior)
How do the male and female pelvic bones differ?
- Male iliac wings flare out while female iliac wings are flatter.
- Male inlet larger AP while female inlet larger in traverse
- Male ilial ischial spines nearer while female ischial spines are farther
- Male pubic arch narrower while female pubic arch wider
What is another name for the iliopsoas muscle
Iliacus muscle
Urinary bladder characteristics
- Pyriamid shaped
- Muscular
- Rests in pelvic floor
- Immediately posterior to symphysis pubis
*
What is the function of the bladder?
Temporary reservoir to store urine
In the normal adult the bladder can hold about _______ of fluid but can hold up to ______ mililiters
one cup; 750 (about 2.5 cups)
Where do the ureters enter the bladder?
On the posterior lateral surface
What is the triangular region of the bladder called?
trigone
What is the length of the male urethra? female urethra?
- male - 18-20 cm
- female 3-4 cm
What are the three regions of the male urethra?
- Prostatic urethra
- Membranous urethra
- Penile urethra
What are the two functions of the male urethra?
- Drain urine from urinary bladder
- Receive secretions from prostatic, ejaculatory and bulbourethral ducts
*Female bladder function is to only drain urine*
The rectum is approximately _____ long.
15 cm
The rectum extends from ____ to ____.
S3; tip of coccyx
List characteristics of the testes
- oval shaped
- suspended in scrotal sacs
- produces sperm and male sex hormones
- about 800 seminiferous tubules
What is the epididymis?
Tightly coiled tubular located superoposterior surface of each testis, sperm transmitted from testesto epididymis for storage and final maturation.
*A tube that connects a testicle to a vas deferens in the male reproductive system
What is the Vas deferens?
Continuation of epididymis, when joins seminal vesicle, forms ejaculatory duct.
What is the seminal vesicle?
Accessory gland, lateral to vas deferens, posterior inferior surface of bladder, produce fructose and coagulating enzyme for seminal fluid which mixes with sperm before ejaculation.
What is the prostate gland?
Largest accessory gland of the male reporoductive system, secretes thin fluid that forms portion of the seminal fluid, located inferior to the bladder, surrounds prostatic urethra.
What is the bulbourethral gland?
- Also known as Cowper’s gland
- 2 small glands lie posterolateral to membranous urethra, secrete alkaline fluid that also forms portion of seminal fluid
Describe the penis
External reporductive organ attached to pubic arch via suspensatory ligaments
The female uterus is ____ shaped muscular organ located in the ______ portion of the pelvic cavity located betwee the ______ and the _______.
pear; anterior; bladder and rectum
The body of the uterus is in the _____________.
upper two thirds
Where do the uterine tubes attach?
Cornua
