What prevented cotton from being more profitable in the 1700s?
It took a long time to hand pick the seeds out of the cotton.

Where was southern cotton shipped?
The cotton was shipped everywhere around the world.
Who are Planters?
They were large-scale farmers who owned more than 20 slaves.
What does King Cotton mean?
“King Cotton is a profound statement and knows what measures will best sustain his throne”.
Did most white southerners own slaves during the ANTEBELLUM
False most did not!
What does Antebellum Mean?
This is the time period before the war.
Who are the yeomen?
The yeomen were owners of small farms. They worked hard and long days.
What happened to the free African Americans in the south?
They lived there, sometimes owned slaves (to buy the freedom of their family), faced tons of discrimination, could not vote.
What was the bad parts of living as a slave?
Separation of children, forced cannibalism, getting beaten to death because you left a piece of cotton behind and more.
How did the African American Culture survive?
Songs about Christianity that are mixed with African beats. the idea of oral tradition, and folklore. The idea of passing down tradition generations.
Who was Nat Turner?
Nat Turner was a preacher, and got many slaves to prepare to revolt. He ended up killed 50 white men, woman and children. This had a bad result however, his rebels got killed/hung/tortured. Many innocent black people got killed, most states put harsher slave codes.
Did Nat Turner Hide?
Yes he did, he hid for 6 weeks, but then got found and was hung.
Cotton Gin helped do what?
Made it easier to take out the seeds which led to the cotton boom.
How did slaves challenge the system?
They ran away for miles, ran to their families and then came back - They would hide from angry Masters, - and more.
How did slaves message each other?
They used the oral tradition, church, church SONGS, and spirituals to message each other.
As slavery increased, white men did what?
White men moved to fin d more land, which essentially took over the native American land and more.
