What caused colonists to turn to African Americans for slave labor?
The European diseases (measles, smallpox, etc.) that wiped out majority of the Native American population.
What was the Middle Passage?
The treacherous voyage across the Atlantic Ocean (1,000+ miles) that slaves had to travel when sold to Europeans.
What is a Diaspora?
The scattering of a people (like a culture or ethnic group)
What caused the African Diaspora?
When 12 million African Americans were shipped across the Atlantic Ocean for slave trade. Mainly to Brazil to work on sugar plantations.
What’s one way enslaved African Americans resisted enslavement?
They sometimes damaged tools, worked slowly, carried out orders incorrectly, and damaged goods
What killed all the Native Americans?
The European Diseases they brought near the Native Americans. They brought over Measles, Smallpox and typhus. Europeans had a natural resistance to them, NA’s did not.
Who was the president of the first anti slavery society?
Benjamin Franklin
Who were the Quakers?
The first religious group that aimed to abolish slavery
What did Elihu Embree do?
He published newspapers called the Emancipator, which spread the message that everyone deserves to be free and have human rights.
What’s something people who wanted to get rid of slavery disagree on?
The amount of freedom African Americans would get, like if they would be now equal to white people or still below them.
Who was Robert Finley?
He was the founded of the American Colonization Society in which they sent all 12,000 of the now freed slaves to a colony in Liberia.
Who opposed the American Colonization Society? Why did they?
David Walker opposed Finley’s actions and claimed that African Americans were being driven away from the bountiful land that they had worked hard to utilize.
