What was the Industrial Revolution?
A period of rapid growth with the usage of machines for manufacturing and producing
What did Richard Arkwright do?
He developed the water framer (Large spinning machine)
What did Samuel Slater do involving textile machines?
He memorized the textile mill machines and plans and immigrated to U.S. disguised as a farmer.
What did Eli Whitney do?
He helped mass production take off by making interchangeable parts that could easily be made by machines.
What’s mass production?
The efficient producing of large numbers of identical goods
What is the Rhode Island System and who developed it?
Developed by Samuel Slater, the Rode Island System is when you hire whole families and distribute factory work among them.
What’s the Lowell System and who developed it?
Francis Cabot Lowell developed the Lowell System, in which he employed young unmarried women to work a large water powered mill. They also had the woman learing how to sew, stitch and craft. Woman from all around the world was interested and wanted a part in this.
What was wrong with the Lowell System?
The working conditions were harsh and unfair, pay was little
What’s a trade union?
A group of people that tried to improve working conditions and pay, sometimes striking until their goal is met.
What did Sarah G. Bagley do?
She wrote articles publicizing the struggles of the mill workers and formed the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association.
Describe the Transportation Revolution
A period of rapid growth in the speed/convenience of travel. Shipping time and costs were also reduced.
What did Robert Fulton do?
He designed the first steamboat called the Clermont which could easily travel against the current
What happens in Gibbens v. Ogden?
Ogden sues Gibbens for operating a steam boat in New York waters that Ogdens claimed to own. Court decided the reinforce the federal government’s authority to regulate state trade.
What did Peter Cooper do?
He built a locomotive called Tom Thumb which started a fever of railroads being built across the country (30,000 miles)
What did Samuel F.B. Morse do?
He developed a telegraph, a device that enabled the transportation of information long distances. His partner developed Morse code to secretly communicate.
What did Cyrus McCormick do?
He developed the mechanical reaper, which efficiently harvested wheat, rural economy surged
What did Issac Singer do?
He perfected the sewing machine which allowed more women to work from home
