Module 4 - Urinary System Flashcards
(38 cards)
What are the 4 organs of the Urinary System?
Ureters, Urinary Bladder, Urethra, Kidney
What are the Ureters and their function?
Muscular tubes that transport urine from kidneys to bladder
What is the Urinary Bladder and its function?
Three layers of smooth muscle, lined with epithelial cells
Stores urine (1 liter)
What is the function of the Urethra?
Carries urine from bladder to outside of body
Two sphincters control urination
How much urine can be stored in the bladder?
1 liter of urine
What position is the kidney in?
Retroperitoneal Position
parallel to the vertebrae
just under your jeans in the back
What is the Principal organ of the Urinary System?
Kidneys
Name the 3 parts of the kidney
Cortex, Medulla, and Renal pelvis
Define the Cortex
outer portion of the kidney
Define the Medulla
inner region of the kidney
Define the Renal pelvis
hollow space in center of kidney where urine collects
What is a Nephron? What are the Two functional parts?
functional unit of the kidney
Two functional parts:
– Tubule
– Associated blood supply
How many Nephrons per Kidney?
1 million nephrons per kidney
What is the Glomerular capsule?
cuplike end of nephron tubule surrounding glomerulus (network of capillaries)
Where is the Glomerular capsule found? What shape is it?
Found in the Nephron and is a C shape
What is the name of the tangled up network where filtration occurs?
Glomerulus
Where is waste collected after the Glomerulus?
Glomerular capsule aka Bowmans capsule
What are the four distinct regions of tubule?
Proximal tubule, Loop of Henle, Distal tubule, Collecting duct
Define Proximal tubule
extends from glomerular capsule to renal medulla
Define Loop of Henle
extends into medulla then back into cortex
Define Collecting duct
shared by several nephrons, empties into renal pelvis
Which tubule is closer to the glomerulus—the proximal tubule or the distal tubule?
proximal tubule is closer to the glomerulus
What are some of substances filtered>
Water, Sodium, Chloride, Potassium, Glucose, Urea, Creatinine, Bicarbonate
How do kidneys respond to excess water?
excreting it, very dilatated urine is produced, we don’t want too much water
