Children master grammar by rule based learning, which can lead to errors of over regularization, what is this?

A

We have regular sets and irregular sets of verbs, over regularizing is to apply the regular rules to exceptions. For example the past tense of go, is went, but children say “goed”.

Q

Explain the linguistic answer of how children acquire grammar so easily

A

Chomsky & onward: Linguistics proposed children are born with mechanisms that simplify the task of learning gramamr.

1) Specific brain regions are involved in language processing.
2) Children develop linguistic communication with little or no language input.
3) Only humans learn grammar so easily.
4) There also appears to be a critical period for learning language. If children aren’t exposed to language before they hit adolescence they will never be able to fully acquire it (Genie, 2nd language acquisition studies)
5) The development of grammar is tied to the development of vocabulary.

Q

Explain the social interaction answer to how children acquire grammar so easily.

A

This answer is a combination of previous components: environment, language is distinct and powerful cognitive skills. Emphasis on the role of social interactions on language acquisition. Much of language pearning takes place in the context of interactions between children and adults with both parties eager for better communication.
