Module Four, Lecture Thirty One Flashcards
The Human Microbe (16 cards)
What does HMP stand for?
The Human Microbiome Project ( 2008 )
What is a microbiome?
The complete collection of microorganisms, and their genes within a particular environment
What is a microbiota?
A individual microbial species in a biome ( bacteria, fungi, archaea and viruses )
What are the goals of the HMP? ( 5 )
- Develop a reference set of microbial genome sequences
- Explore relationships between disease and the change
- Develop new technology
- Establish a research repository
- To study the ethical, legal and social implications of the HMP
What are the functions of the HM? ( 9 )
- Prevents pathogens from being successful
- Block colonisation niches
- Competing for nutrients
- Modifying environments to change
- Making environments actively hostile ( producing bacteriocins and short chain fatty acids ( SCFA )
- Lowering pH
- Cause host to thicken mucus layer
- Cause host to up regulate antimicrobial peptides
- Primes host neutrophils and macrophages
What is Gut Flora?
An ecosystem of microbes that live in your intestines
What are the names of human microbial communities? ( 4 )
- Firmicutes
- Bacteroidetes
- Actinobacteria
- Proteobacteria
What is the human gut known as?
Digestive tract - Highest density of microbes int he human body
What are some functions of the Gut Microbiome? ( 4 )
- Creates SCFA that modulate our metabolism and affects our defence against pathogens
- Synthesis vitamins
- Modulate the immune response
- Alter drug delivery
What does Functional Food stand for?
Health-promoting or disease-preventing properties beyond the basic functions of supplying nutrients
What are Prebiotics?
Any ingredient that beneficially nourishes the good bacteria already in the large bowel or colon
What are Probiotics?
Live microorganisms / fermented foods
What do Prebiotics do?
Stimulate the growth of probiotics ( used like a fertiliser )
What is Fecal Matter Transplants?
Fecal microbiota transplantation ( FMT ) is a highly successful treatment for multiple recurrences of Clostridium difficile infection ( CDI )
What are the risks of FMT? ( 3 )
- Diseases
- Complications due to procedures
- Identification of correct donors
What are the solutions of FMT? ( 2 )
- Synthetic communities
- Stool banks
